Influence of Commedia dell'arte essays Commedia dellArte has two major elements: improvisation and stock characters (Brockett 150). Stock characters were so important that usually one actor played the same role throughout his career. Commedia dellArte was created for the common people since most earlier Italian shows were put on for an aristocratic audience. The characters of commedia dellArte were either straight or exaggerated roles (Brockett 150). The young lovers were like the pop culture in Italian theater. They dressed in the styles of the time, they were clever, and they were attractive (and not masked). They could illustrate how strange the other characters were. The male lovers father rejected the sons lover. The young woman had both old and young male lovers (Brockett 150). The character roles were usually master or servant. The masters were usually ridiculous. There was the Capitano, who was an exaggerated character who bragged about his ample love abilities and fighting, but who was actually a coward and not so great in the sack. Pantalone was an old man, a merchant, who would pretend to be a young man and court the young ladies. Il Dottore was Pantalones friend. Il Dottore, the doctor, was an asshole to his family and a braggart about his knowledge. The zanni (the servants) in the exaggerated characters were also very important. There was Harlequin, who was a mixture of cunning and stupidity (Brockett 152), usually a dancer. Next came Brighella, Harlequins horny, asshole- yet witty friend. Scaramouche (by far my favorite of the names) who was sometimes like Harlequin and sometimes like Brighella, and Pulcinella (who played different roles- servant or merchant) who had a crooked nose and a hunchback and was a mix of different attributes. Quasi, the Queer Qualifier Quasi, the Queer Qualifier Quasi, the Queer Qualifier By Mark Nichol What, exactly, does the prefix quasi mean, and can it stand on its own? The term, from Latin, is used as a qualifier to denote that something resembles or is like something but is not exactly equivalent, and, yes, quasi is an adverb. Quasi often appears in phrasal adjectives as a more formal alternative to â€Å"kind of† or â€Å"sort of†: A quasinomadic culture, for example, is one that has some but not all characteristics of a purely nomadic society. Something quasihistorical is based on fact but partly or mostly fictitious, such as the tales associated with King Arthur. A quasimilitary organization is one that resembles a military organization but does not function under the authority of a formal government, such as a rebel militia, or does not have a military function, such as the Salvation Army. (Words beginning with quasi are often seen hyphenated, but the hyphen is unnecessary.) Quasi may also, on its own, modify a noun, as in â€Å"quasi leader† (such constructions are often unnecessarily hyphenated), or even, rarely, a verb. The name of Quasimodo, the titular protagonist of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, is related. Because, as an infant, the character was abandoned at Notre Dame on Low Sunday, the first Sunday after Easter, he was named after the first words uttered during the Catholic Mass held on that day: â€Å"Quasi modo geniti infants† (â€Å"as newborn babes†). (I had always assumed the name means â€Å"half formed.†) Two words, one common and the other obscure, are based on quasi: Quasar is a contraction of â€Å"quasistellar radio source† (Merriam-Webster hyphenates quasistellar, but for consistency, I’m closing it), and quango is an acronym for â€Å"quasi-non-governmental organization†; it’s also employed as a prefix in quangocracy and quangocrat. Quasi is also seen as the first element in the odd British English term quasihemidemisemiquaver (styled semihemidemisemiquaver in American English), which refers to the extremely short 128th note in music. The shortest named note is the demisemihemidemisemiquaver, or 256th note; hemidemisemiquaver is the name of a 64th note, and demisemiquaver and semiquaver, respectively, denote the two next-shortest notes in British English. (In American English, they are referred to simply as 32nd and 16th notes.) The prefixes semi-, demi-, and hemi- (the first two from Latin, and the last from Greek), meanwhile, all mean â€Å"half† (the first two can also mean â€Å"partly†). Semi is perhaps best known to readers of American English as the abbreviated term for a large tractor truck that hauls freight; the full term is semitrailer, which refers to the trailer with no forward wheels that is attached to such a truck. Burnt by the Sun :: Nikita Mikhalkov Burnt by the Sun Movies Essays

Burnt by the Sun Nikita Mikhalkov's Burnt by the Sun was released in 1994, a year in which over seven decades of communism were undoubtedly still a vivid memory in the eyes of the Russian people. The transition from dictatorship to democracy left them with no choice but to try and disregard their past in order to better accept the many changes that the future would bring. In Burnt by the Sun, however, the director focuses on the characters' human emotions rather than condemn their ideology or their motivations. He thus brings us close to these individuals who are clutching the remnants of the ideals they originally fought for, and who, with the return of an old friend, are suddenly forced to simultaneously confront their future and search through their past. Throughout the whole movie this is the main theme the viewer is given to reflect on: the clash between the sweet, safe, nostalgic past and the forthcoming of a bitter, dangerous, uncertain future. This theme is particularly alive in the sequence 'Arrival of Summer Santa'. By analyzing the opening segment of this sequence, we realize that it is the editing which renders the conflict so palpable. From one cut to the next, we learn Nadia and Mitia's implicit memories and desires; during their conversation, the cutting alone makes us realize what will happen; near the end of the sequence, one simple cut says more than a minute-long scene ever could have done. Thanks to the editing, we become involved with the characters, and grow fully aware of the symbolic opposition between Nadia and Mitia, between past and future. The sequence opens with various shots of the Red Army pioneers marching along the road. We gradually move to the back of the parade until we see Mitia, in disguise, marching with them. However, the camera only stays with him for a brief instant. It tilts down to reveal a young boy who is probably the same age as Nadia, and right after that we cut to a shot of her, at the gate, saluting the pioneers. That single cut reveals the entire essence of Nadia's character. She has one desire: to be a pioneer. She has been raised in a family that cultivates the memory of an idealistic communist regime, in which unity and devotion prevail. Nadia embodies the memories and desires of her people: memories of a past utopia, and desires to keep that utopia alive. The Knight symbolizes everything good In a human, Chaucer does not satire him at all; however, it is the complete opposite with the Pardoner. The Pardoner symbolizes the lowest a man could get, he chea ts, he steals, and he lies all for the benefit of himself.Chaucer narrates that â€Å"he had the same small voice of goat has got. His chin no beard had harbored, nor would harbor, smoother than ever chln was left by barber. Similar to Chaucer, Seth Meyers of Saturday Night Live does a great, hilarious, yet interesting way of satiri7ing others, making us feel better as humans, and still show us how to celebrate life.Not only does he satlrlze politicians, but he also finds d way to satirize common people. In a recent episode of Saturday Night Live he states â€Å"A man In Hawaii came face to face with a shark while surfing survived by punching the shark in the face, meanwhile saw a cockroach in the bathroom and now I shower at he gym† (SNL S39 E4) Examples such as this one show that humans make funny decisions, yet It still finds a way to celebrate life because the guy lived and the people but still makes fun of himself.Humans are flawed, and it is better and easier to satire the flaws, rather than try so hard to become perfect. Satire is seen every day, everywhere, whether it is television, literature, movies, comics, newspapers, etc. It is a great way to show the flaws, but helps all of mankind to aspire to become better people as well as celebrate the unperfected yet beautiful life we have.

Sherman Alexie “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian”

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie is an eye opening book about the life of an Indian boy in the Reservation called Arnold Spirit Jr, or just Junior as his people call him. Junior is considered weird by his people because of many reasons. He also lead a hard life with his parents, sister, grandmother, and Rowdy as his only friend. As a baby, Junior have too much fluid in his brain that caused his thinking process to slow down, and highly susceptible to seizure.Fortunately, surgery on his head solved this problem, but with some side effect. Junior’s head is larger, one of his eye is near-sighted while the other is far sighted, his feet is also larger making him looks like a walking letter L, and he have ten extra teeth which need to be taken out in one day in order for him to eat normally(Alexie 3). However, despite of all his drawback, Junior manage to live a normal life not including the treatment from all his friend. The majority of the story i s divided into two parts which show how junior grow and try to get ‘hope’.The first part is when Junior still go to school in wellpinit without any friend except Rowdy, and the second part is when Junior start going to Reardan and mingle with the white kids. By the end of the novel, Junior is a much different person than the one introduced to us at the beginning. Alexie shows us that only through constant struggle and failure will we ultimately experience true success. At the first part of the story, Junior struggle with his family through their poor life which lead Junior to realize what it means to be poor.The life of an Indian in the reservation is full of down mainly because they are always poor. Moreover, most of the Indians are alcoholic and tend to cause many problems when they are drunk. According to research by National Longitudinal Alcohol Epidemiological Study (NLAES), â€Å"reservation residents were likely to report greater quantities of alcohol consumed p er drinking occasion than were other Americans†(Beals 340). The reason that they continue to drink excessively is because they have no means of entertainment, and they want to forget their suffering because of the poor life.The first event that make Junior realize what it is to be poor is when Oscar, his dog, is sick and dying. His parents choose to shot it to death and there is nothing he can do about it. They are too poor to bring him to the hospital while a bullet only cost a few cents. This event make Junior think that â€Å"poverty doesn’t give you strength or teach you lessons about perseverance. No, poverty only teaches you how to be poor†(Alexie 13). People who is poor will always be poor if they do not start thinking otherwise.Alexie want to convey this to the reader because there are many poor people who just give up and accept the fact that they are poor. The point where Junior start thinking about hope is at the end of the first part when he throw a b ook to his teacher accidentally. When it is time to study geometry, his favorite subject, in his school, Junior realize when he got the book that the previous owner of it was his mother before she even married. Because of this, Junior feel angry that the school is so poor that they cannot afford using a new book to educate their student. Junior then throw the book out of anger but it hit Mr. P, the teacher without any intention to do so.This is the reality of the education in a reservation but, some of the reservation have better education depending on the funding from the government or private party. According to research, â€Å"Inspite of our continental complaints, it should be obvious that indian education has made some major progress since 1960, and that while funds are hard to come by for many students, the overall pictures appears very bright† (Deloria 113). After this accident and Junior got suspended for a week, Mr. P come to Junior’s home to forgive and advic e Junior to leave the rez in pursuit of hope. Mr. P told Junior that all the people in the reservation have given up except Junior which become the reason why Junior throw the book.Mr. P also told Junior that if he choose to stay, the whole reservation will kill him which means that Junior will have the same future as the other from reservation. After Mr. P go home, Junior immediately asked his parents for him to transfer to Reardan, one of the white school 22 miles away from where he lives. His parents consent and support his decision, but not his friends. He got hit by his best friend, and he was labeled traitor by his own people, but he still continue on in order to find hope.Alexie wants to show us how important it is to be able to throw away one past in order to get to a better future. Most people always afraid to take a step forward because they are not certain what will happen if they step out of the norm, but sometimes, like junior, one will need to be different in order to be successful. The second part of the story is the main cause of Junior’s change although he needs to climb his way up to be accepted by the white people in Reardan. When junior first arrive at Reardan, the first impression that he got from the white kids was the difference of wealth between them and the Indian.The white kid is the opposite of Indian, and Junior feel that he do not deserve to be there as the only Indian, but this did not stop him. At first, he was mocked and scrutinized by the white kids because he is the only Indian. But, it changes when Roger,one of the popular kids, went to far and cause Junior to hit him in the face. Immediately after that, Junior feel that he will be destroyed by him as revenge but to his surprise, he gain their respect instead. according to his grandmother, the wise person in his family, Junior gain respect because he prove himself to the head of the pack that he is not weak and can be terrorized every time.Roger become his first friend at the school, and the bullying lessened considerably. The next friend that he got is Penelope, the popular girl in the school, the one who Junior have a crush with. He manage to be her friend after he console her after she got sick, and manage to increase their relationship steadily after that. With two of the most popular kid as his friend, The bullying completely stop, and Junior also gain more friends including Gordy, the genius and weird people in the school, after he help Junior in one of the class that they have together.Junior also got into the varsity basketball team because the coach remember him as a good shooter and he refuse to give up when the coach test him in the tryouts. This part of Junior’s life teach us that respect need to be gained through one own effort, and one need to show something worthy of that respect. Junior start to get a better life in Reardan compared to Wellpinit, but he began to question his identity since he feel more as a white while bein g Indian is a part-time job for him. Junior first feel that way when he first play against wellpinit in a basketball match.He feels like he become two different people inside one body. He is an Indian, but he thinks like a white people as his people said, he is like an apple; read on the outside, but white on the inside. In the game, all of the people in the reservation who watch the game except Rowdy, turn their back against Junior. One of the people even throw a quarter to Junior’s head which cause bleeding and cause him to go out of the game. When he came back, Rowdy hit his head and give Junior a concussion taking him out from the game.At the second game against Wellpinit, Junior fight again with Rowdy and even win against him and bring reardan team to victory. He was happy at first, but then he realize that he just beat his own people. Junior continue to ask himself his identity while he also need to handle the death of his father friend, one of the people who support Ju nior’s decision and not brand him a traitor, his grandma and his sister. This three event lead Junior to the answer about his identity that he is both Indian and white or as Rowdy said it in the end of the story, Junior is a nomad.He will not be tied down by any tradition, and he will continue to improve himself. This also teach us how important it is to know our own identity because it can be used as a base on how to think when in time of confusion. At the end of the story, Junior have already grown a lot after all the experience he got while he study in Reardan. He grow from a nobody into someone who is important to all of his friend in Reardan. At the reservation, all the people also stop mocking him after his grandma death. Rowdy also get back to being friend with Junior and turn to support junior in his decision.Rowdy also said that Junior is a nomadic Indian, old time Indian who continue to move around to look for food, water and grazing land. Rowdy also said that Junio r is the only nomadic Indian in the reservation and no one else. So in the end, Junior manage to gain height where no other people in the reservation ever hope to achieve. Junior got it with sheer effort and never giving up no matter what obstacle he have to face. Even at the death of his family member, how hard it is to travel to school, despite being different, despite having drawback during his childhood, he never gave up and finally got his hope.

It is not as newsworthy now as in the past when a woman is promoted to the head of a business over many men. To compare and contrast the ways women succeed in gaining power at work without discussing the relationships they have had and currently have with men is impossible. Most all women have stated how hard it is to get to where they are or want to be but they all use men’s habits and traits to state on how to overcome their own issues with progression. The most basic description given for how to generalize the basic issues women have with initially establishing themselves is the historical differences that they have with man. Sharon Patrick (President and COO of Martha Stewart Living) stated that there are differences between men and women in management style – not in skills but in style. She compared it to a Broadway show â€Å"Defending the Caveman† where men hunt and women gather as natural instincts. This is the basic instinct that most women feel that they need to overcome to be successful but many have found that this is not the route for all to follow. Many women feel and have proven that using their own natural instincts are working to overcome their past shortcomings. Many women who have chosen the routes of using the head on approach with men by using mans natural or instinctive traits of win, take no prisoners, intimidation and not taking any steps back approach have succeeded but have had to sacrifice much to do so. These women have become just as successful and many of the men they work or were competitive against but usually still do not get to the top but are content with the power that they have gained. Most of the women that have used this approach are the frontiers of the women in the corporate world and these practices are not used as frequently as in the past. Women today are trending to use their natural instincts to succeed in the corporate world. Most men use their forceful, bully and pressuring tactics to negotiate what they want or need but the women are using their natural abilities to collaborate, searching for common interest, and solving problems; which is normally seen by men as a sign of weakness but are producing high-quality results. Many women believe that we are living in the relationship era where it’s all about getting closer to the customers, striking up new ventures, and partnering with suppliers. It’s instinctual for women to work with these methods where using this methodology; warriors don’t make good CEO’s in companies based on relationships. The new CEO is a seeder, feeder and weeder and these are all women roles which would make a woman mighty in a man’s world. Some women today believe that in by working together they can better overcome many of the differences that they have to climb up the corporate ladder. They believe that by using their numbers of women that are currently in power positions in the corporate world that they can affect the future progression of current and future women to power positions. This forum is currently being used in many different areas of the world but it is often not supported by many of the women already in these power positions because they feel that they may actually hurt the chances of their and future women and cause a backlash of the efforts that they have already made to progress themselves. While women are definitely making progress in a so called man’s world; it is happening to slowly for many women. Women have found that one of their biggest challenges in progressing to power positions is not their skills or competency or even their natural traits; it is the power that men have with one another. Men naturally chose other men that are in their circle of trust or men they associate with daily as their successors or promotions are given to these men because they obviously know and trust them more than outsiders (which is often what women are known as in the corporate world as a whole). Taking chances is often thought by most women is the best way to rise where others won’t. Overcoming this issue is more than just a challenge for most women but the ultimate goal due to the sacrifices that most of them have given up from their natural traits; which is usually motherhood for most. In the Hospitality Industry Job Satisfaction Is Critical to Service Efficiency - Research Paper Example Societal norms are changing where loyalty is no more considered an important criterion (Gustafson, 2002). Managers are faced with the challenge to retain current employees and position themselves in a way to attract talent. The situation is challenging because the staff is unskilled and untrained. If the organization invests in their training, employees switch to better-paying jobs and this translates into fresh recruitment and training costs. Without training, the employees do not find the work meaningful and hence results in poor job satisfaction and low organizational commitment. Job redesigning, better communication between the staff and the managers, a stable work environment, sense of belonging, recognition, flexible working hours, mentorship, groups tasks, shorter working hours and compensation programs can help to increase the level of job satisfaction and increase organizational commitment. Locke (1976) has defined job satisfaction as a pleasurable emotional state resulting from the appraisal of one's job or job experience (cited by Lee, 2000). Job satisfaction is directly related to motivation, role clarity and organizational commitment. Organizational commitment relates to an attachment to the organization while job satisfaction is concerned with the task environment where the employee performs his duties. An extensive study conducted by Woods and Macaulay in 1989 to try and determine the reasons for high turnover in the hospitality industry revealed eight frequently cited reasons – quality of supervision, ineffective communication, working conditions, quality of co-workers, inability to ‘fit’ with the organizational culture, low pay and few benefits, lack of clear definition of responsibilities, no direction at work (cited by Gustafson).
